Eros Thanatos

Eros Thanatos is an installation by artist Erika Harrsch, with sound design by Edmund Mooney, for which we traveled to Michuacan, Mexico to capture the sights and sounds of the monarch butterfly migration. The piece started as a discussion at a rooftop bar bq between myself and Erika about how to best capture the sound of the butterflys in their natural mating ground. Erika, through the sweat of her brow, managed to raise the money to fly us both to Mexico and we traveled with her dear friend and our trusted accomplice, Gabby to the wilds of Central Mexico. We spent 3 days in the most beucolic setting capturing audio, video and still photography of the butterflys. We then used this amazing material, along with Erika's concept for the piece, to make a multi-layered installation at Diverse Works Gallery in Houston Texas. The piece has since traveled to Brazil and work inspired by it has traveled all over Europe with the multi-disciplinary classical performance group Vision into Art.
